=========================================================

1 WELCOME:

The BIG NEWS this month is our Mid-Summer SALE!!  It is already under way and almost all of our Canadian made digital products have been reduced by 50%!!  We can’t afford to let a sale like this run for too long, so jump on the “bandwagon” while you can.  See Section 3 of this newsletter for a few more details.

We also updated all our regular departments, News & Gossip and Family History Announcements although now we are now into full summer here in Ontario and the flow of Genealogy news is in the midst of its annual slow down.

--------------

Remember this Newsletter is published for you so if you think we're missing something important, or something you would enjoy, drop me a line to Malcolm@ArchiveCDBooks.ca.

Newsletters work best when they get a good circulation. We're doing our best to let people know about it but you could help us along by mentioning it to your genealogy buddies and generally spreading the word. Feel free to pass this copy along, but only in its complete form please.

All newsletter administration messages should be e-mailed to

Books@ArchiveCDBooks.ca

In the Subject line you may write:

2 WHAT'S IN THE NEWSLETTER:

- OUR MID SUMMER SALE.

- A look at what’s coming.

- All our news, gossip and announcements.

===================

3. WHAT’S NEW?:

*  MID SUMMER SALE

For a limited time we have reduced the price of almost all of our digital products by 50% for a MID SUMMER MADNESS sale.

This is the chance you have been waiting for to get that book you wanted but couldn’t quite justify to your budget!!  You can stock up on presents too!

To see what is on sale go to our “home” page at

www.ArchiveCDBooks.ca/

and select the “CANADA” choice from the left hand column.  (Or go to your favorite Province if you prefer.)

ALL THE PRODUCTS ON SALE ARE MARKED WITH A GREEN STICKER, and clicking on the picture will take you to the description page where you can see both the regular price AND THE SALE PRICE.

(We regret that we cannot reduce the price of our Gleanings products because they are already at the minimum viable price.)

(We only charge you enough “shipping” to cover our costs.  Because of Canada Posts extraordinary pricing “policy” it is occasionally possible to package multiple orders in a particular way so as to save costs and if we see such a chance we will do so and make the necessary adjustment to your C-Card charge.)

==================

4 COMING SOON:

I was hoping we would be able to release the “Original manuscript” digital product, I mentioned in the last newsletter, in time for this one but as so often happens with something new, we have had a few “stumbles” so we can’t quite make it.  I have, however, promised our most patient author that we will have it by August and I don’t think I fibbed!.

Unfortunately these stumbles took time from our preparation of the “Family History” digital reproduction book I mentioned so it too has been delayed.

However, the good news is that we also started a new and significant book digitization which was originally published in two volumes, for several reasons, one of which would be that a single volume would be phsically most unwieldy!  We actually have volume 1 complete and ready for release but because we will be offering it as separate volume products AND as one combined digital product, we are withholding release until the other two products are ready - - - - next month?

 ===================

5 NEWS & GOSSIP:

If any of you have genealogy related questions of a general nature - or something specifically related to Archive CD Books - we'd be glad to publish your question in this newsletter so you can tap into the enormous fund of knowledge which I know is out there.

At the end of the recent OGS Conference in Barrie the OGS formally announced that the theme of their next. 2016, Conference as “Genealogy on the Cutting Edge.”  The OGS Conference will be on June 3-5, 2016 and will be in Toronto's International Plaza Hotel.  This is near Pearson International Airport, on Dixion (NOT DIXIE!) Rd. and was also the chosen venue of the 2010 conference - one of the most successful venues we have attended.

CALL FOR PAPERS:

The conference organizers have also issued a “call for papers” and it can be read online at:

http://www.ogs.on.ca/conference/call-for-presentations/

The deadline for submissions is 14 AUGUST, 2015.

__________

OUR CANADA - YOUR FAMILY, BUILDING A NATION:

The OGS picks their theme for the 2017 conference (NOTE:  2017, not 16!)

Is the theme which has been chosen for the Society's conference to be held in Ottawa (the Nation’s Capital); and what a fantastic title!  And the reason that the title of the conference was chosen is that 2017 will be the 150th birthday of the founding of Canada. It will be a super busy time in Ottawa, so why not plan to attend the conference and do some sightseeing during your stay?

This will be the sixth time that Ottawa Branch will have hosted the conference (plus they co-hosted the 2012 conference in Kingston.)

They already have a small group of volunteers, but they are always looking for more people join them in these efforts.   You can contact them by email at:

conference2017@ogsottawa.on.ca    OR,

Their webpage is: http://ogsottawa.on.ca/

Want a cut-price membership for the Ontario Genealogical Society?  Following their practice of the last couple of years the OGS are offering a $37.00 Cdn membership for the remainder of this membership year (ending 31 October 2015.)  If you have been wanting to sample the OGS membership, but found their full price membership too much to bite off, this may suit you better.  To find out more follow this link:

___________

TRADITION OR TRENDY?

From what I can see Genealogy is the purview of the senior demographics or, in plain language, Genealogy is for older people.  While agreeing with every effort which is being made to involve the younger set, and also hastening to say I’m only talking about “trends,” not about exclusive grouping so I’m not excluding genealogy as an occupation of any age, but the point I’m trying to get at is that when we talk about “genealogist” we are talking about a group which is largely coming up to, and past retirement age.  In a separate foray into trends, this is the group which has already seen a lot of change in their lives and is generally recognized to be more comfortable with the familiar.

So - if you are still following - I wonder if you are with me in wondering why some quite significant groups are trying to stop calling our gatherings “meetings” in favor of modern terms like, “Special Events,” and “Learn with ______”?

The frenzied and hyperbole riddled world of advertising seems adverse to using the same term more than once, and is continuously bending and stretching traditional meanings in a search for a new way to “tag” things, but does that mean that we should carry this attention seeking language into the more staid and comfortable world of our genealogical research?

I’m probably “a silly old fossil” but even the already mentioned advertising professions recognizes that you have to target your message appropriately, and language is NOT a “one size fits all” tool.

Just saying . . . . .

___________

WE'RE ON FACEBOOK:

We use our Facebook page to spread the word about notable events, special offers and just plain old “scuttlebutt” which we think will be of interest to Canadian genealogists, and which may have a short “shelf life.” To me, being a Canadian genealogist means having roots in other parts of the World as well as right here.  In an effort to keep focused on the Canadian content I try to filter out a lot of the vast wave of US (only) news which tend to overwhelmed most other news sources.

In the past month we have made 15 posts and the 5 most popular were:

Charges of “influence” changing the reporting of one of last years “Finding Your Roots” series of programs.

•         Reporting dubious changes in Ancestry.au’s conditions of subscription.

•         News of the introduction of a new “feature” in the search engine of MyHerritage.com ’s website.  Good or bad?

•        A link to a free "Index to French Canadian Revolutionary War Patriots”

•        A post of the results of a recent project undertaken by a “Book and Paper Conservator” who we are proud to work with when we can.

We try and keep our postings to only “significant” events - as they occur -  but we do also try to include posts about “specials” and “free access” opportunities, which may only be announced a few days/hours, before they happen.

We like to think of our Facebook page as a compliment to this Newsletter, and sometimes  as a quicker reacting extension.

Add your “Like” to our FB page and be “in the know” as it happens.

If you are already a Facebook member then you can find the Archive CD Books Canada wall by searching for our name or at:

https://www.facebook.com/ArchiveCDBooksCanada

If you have not yet joined Facebook you can use the same URL but you will need to "sign in" before you can read our wall.

If you have an item which you would like us to give a public airing on Facebook (and you don't wish to do it yourself) - or if you wish to have it posted in this newsletter then send it to me at:

Malcolm@ArchiveCDBooks.ca and we'll see what we can do.  (Please indicate that you would prefer we post it on Facebook otherwise we may leave it to be posted in the newsletter.)

______________

IMPORTANT NOTICE ABOUT EMAIL:

Mail filters are becoming very aggressive and we are still getting newsletter subscriptions from addresses which subsequently reject our confirmation notices and postings. (We are routinely getting several reject notices a month - in spite of unsubscribing people after their third sequential rejection!)  If you hear of someone complaining that we ignored their newsletter subscription, or that we have stopped delivering to them, please tell them to check their rejected messages and to edit their personal filter to accept the ArchiveCDBooks.ca domain or the Malcolm@ArchiveCDBooks.ca address.  THANK YOU!

ADDITIONAL NOTE:  Many ISP’s are now using networked “black-list” filters to prevent bulk S_pam_ing*.  Don’t forget to put our addresses (above) on your ISPs “allow” or “white-list” so this news letter doesn’t finish up in the Trash bin.  Well, not before you have read it anyway.

(*There are certain words that activate these filters and the unmodified version of this word is one of them!)
