Welcome to Moms on Call’s video: Baby Basics: Soothing Techniques [Introduction music and imagery displays] I'm Laura Hunter. And I'm Jennifer Walker. And today we're going to show you a couple of soothing techniques for babies under three months of age. There are two times to soothe. One is when you're putting down your baby initially. And the other is when you're trying to stretch out a sleep time, like in the middle of nap time or in the middle of nighttime. You will notice that this baby will be swaddled Moms on Call style, which means they can totally relax. We recommend you take a look at our swaddle video to perfect the Moms on Call swaddle technique. It makes the difference between three to four hours a night and seven to 10 hours a night. When the baby is fussy before a sleep time, you can do the baby Ferris wheel. This is a very good upper body workout and honestly, it works anytime. Another time that we employ soothing techniques is when we're trying to stretch out a feeding. About 30 to 45 minutes into a nap time or about two to three hours into nighttime, babies naturally get into what's called twilight sleep, where they become more alert. When this happens, you'll notice in the Moms on Call resources that we give you very specific guidelines as to when to intervene. And you'll notice here, we're checking the swaddle and we're making sure that that's secure. If you need to re-swaddle the baby, go ahead and do it at this time. That swaddle is so important. Then the next technique is to shush and rub their belly just for a few seconds. And then we'll shush and gently jiggle, applying just a little pressure right there to their midsection. And finally, if these things are unsuccessful after about a minute, then we can go on and use the paci. Right at the moment when you notice their eyes are slightly closing, you can take the paci out and see if they'll settle right down to sleep. Thank you for joining us here at Moms on Call. These soothing techniques can absolutely transform those nap times and night times. And we're so glad that you joined us today.
