Study finds Alzheimer's risk higher in ADT patients

This Practitioner Network Newsletter examines a study published in the Journal of Clinical Oncology that found a higher risk of developing Alzheimer's disease among prostate cancer patients who were treated with androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) in comparison with those who did not receive ADT. "Based on the results of our study, an increased risk of Alzheimer's disease is a potential adverse effect of ADT, but further research is needed before considering changes to clinical practice," said study lead author Kevin T. Nead, MD, MPhil, of the Department of Radiation Oncology at the University of Pennsylvania's Perelman School of Medicine. "It's hard to determine the precise amount of increased risk in just one study and important to note that this study does not prove causation."
